Spring 2019 Project Description

DePaul University

WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL AND WHEN DID YOU GRADUATE? WHAT WAS YOUR FOX SPORTS U PROJECT ABOUT?

I attended DePaul University in Chicago, IL. I recently graduated in June of 2020 with my Master of Arts degree in Digital Communication and Media Arts. I took the FOX Sports U course my spring quarter of 2018-2019. The focus of our project was to create a campaign on the collaboration of FOX Sports and the WWE, along with SmackDown moving from Monday nights to Friday nights.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT TITLE – WHAT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES FALL UNDER THIS ROLE?

I recently obtained a position as a Digital Content Editor with Minnesota United. My role begins November 9th. My duties will consist of assisting our social media manager with their social accounts, assisting our senior editor with written content, interviewing players, creating podcasts, and much more.
Prior to this position I worked with National Women’s Soccer League for a year as a Public Relations Intern. I actually obtained this position because of my experience with the FOX Sports course. There I would manage emails to and from the media, create injury reports, manage game notes, event plan for the 2019 NWLS Championship, the 2020 NWSL Draft, and the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup. I also obtained an internship with the Chicago Red Stars before this position, again because of the course and also networking with those I knew from being a Street Team member in 2017. My position was a Game Day Photographer/Videographer. In this position I would capture photographs and videos that my manager would assign to me on a shot sheet before every match.

HOW DID YOUR TIME WORKING ON A FOX SPORTS UNIVERSITY PROJECT HELP PAVE YOUR CAREER PATH?

Being able to take the FOX Sports University course and present our idea to FOX Sports and WWE executives was an amazing experience. It provided us with a chance to experience what companies expect from you when creating a campaign for them. All of the details matter, big and small. Nonetheless it was something unique to put on my resume and be able to discuss with professionals when seeking internships.

WHAT SKILLS OR TRAITS WOULD YOU CONSIDER VITAL FOR ANYONE ENTERING THE SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT FIELD POST-COLLEGE?

Teamwork:
Companies that you will work for have yearly goals and values that they want to achieve. With that being said, you have to remember that there is no “I” in team. Everyone is vital in one way or another and you have to work together to achieve those goals.
Flexibility:
People who want to work in the sports industry need to realize that they have to be able to switch gears when employers ask. In other words, you need to be able to wear different hats and be open to learning how to do somethings that you may not be familiar with.
Management & Responsibility:
Mistakes happen and when they do, you have to be able to take the heat for something that went wrong. It’s because of this that management and responsibility are key. You have to pay attention to the details of everything, be responsible with your work, and manage your tasks.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE STUDENTS YOUR AGE LOOKING TO LAND AN INTERNSHIP OR FULL-TIME JOB AT A PLACE LIKE FOX?

Network, network, network. I cannot stress how important it is to get to know people who work within the sports industry, especially with the sport you desire to work in. It’s always a great idea to reach out to people via LinkedIn and at Sports Job Fairs. This gives you an opportunity to ask them questions about what they do, what they did to get where they are today, and demonstrate your skills so they can keep you in mind if anything ever opens up. Just remember, your first impression can go a long way.
